Uses

To date, this is the only coating for food tanks to be certified as fire retardant and identified by an international MED number.

Approved by the most blue-blooded yacht and superyacht builders, used on large cruise ships, merchant ships and navy vessels.

Main features

It has met with the approval of all professional painting teams working at shipyards for the following reasons:

  • it's very easy to apply by roller and brush
  • it's absolutely odourless and has no harmful emissions

Analyses of K40 coatings applied over ten years ago have shown that they have retained their food grade properties.

Its strength and elasticity properties also remain stable over time.

ASTM/IMO certified as fire retardant, international MED number 122.

Treatment of surfaces to be coated

  • Metal: it's important to give common metals like steel and aluminium, which have a rough surface, a good clean, making sure there are no traces of dirt, grease or residual machining swarf.
  • When dealing with stainless steel, aluminium and other metals with a shiny finish, it's always best to prepare the surface by abrasive blasting, sanding or brushing to promote optimum adhesion.
  • Fibreglass: a good clean and degreasing is enough to ensure a good standard of finish; where surfaces are particularly shiny and smooth, the surface will need to be prepared first by abrasive blasting, sanding or brushing.
  • In extreme cases, when dealing with tanks made from more demanding plastic polymers like PP and PE, special adhesion-promoting primers may need to be applied in addition to other treatments, such as flaming.

For cleaning the metal surfaces the suitable diluent is DPM01

For cleaning the plastic surfaces the suitable diluent is DPP02

Application

The coating is really easy to apply by roller or brush and can be applied to a high thickness in the order of 200-300 microns per coat, even on vertical surfaces.

It's essential to reach all corners of the tank, hence a second coat is recommended, after allowing the first to dry for 24 hours, in order to ensure full coverage and perfect results.

Final thickness will be in the range from 400 to 600 microns.

This is a ready product that can be used to cover an area of approx. 4 square metres per kilogram of coating, based on a thickness of 250 microns.
