Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ

Why is the price of Riloplast so high ?

The costs of production and the raw materials are very high.
Production batches, depending on the colours, are very small, from a minimum of 25 kg to a maximum of 100 kg.
Taking into account that each production batch is tested with strict quality controls, high costs are clearly reached.
On the other hand, Riloplast is the wrinkle coating that has been unrivalled for over 30 years.

Why does my wrinkling appear different to that in the catalogue ?

The reasons may be one of the following:

  1. insufficient thickness of the coating;
  2. temperature of the oven below 55 °C ( sometimes the value indicated on the display is not the same as the actual value); for this reason a temperature of 70 – 80° C should be applied;
  3. Insufficient oven time; the piece should remain in the oven for at least 1 hour, even 2 hours.

What is the product’s shelf life?

  1. definitely 1 year in an unopened tin and stored in a cool place; sometimes even after 2 years the paint is still in optimum condition;
  2. the spray can version also has the same duration;
  3. expiry on the label is conservative; and paint certainly has a longer shelf life

How do I store the paint left over in the tin ?

Before closing the tin, spray a small amount of turpentine or nitro-synthetic or synthetic thinner over the paint.
Do not stir, allow the thin film of thinner to cover the paint, in order to prevent the top layer in contact with the air from drying thereby forming a dry skin. When the tin is opened again, mix well and apply.

Are special tools needed to apply Riloplast ?

Riloplast can only be applied by spraying, using a standard spray gun or with the spray can.
The cup spray gun can have either a lower or an upper cup.
The spray nozzle must have a minimum diameter of 1.5 mm up to a maximum diameter of 2.2 mm.
The adjustment of the air pressure is very important;
This value must be between 3 and 4 atm.
This pressure must be adjusted before starting spraying by making slight adjustments to the atomizing.

Is a special oven needed for baking ?

The oven must be working correctly, with a uniform temperature of at least 55° C but also 80° C. A kitchen type oven can also be used.
Proceeding as follows:
a. before introducing the painted piece, turn on the oven, setting the thermostat at 80° C;
b. when you are sure that the oven has reached the said temperature, introduce the piece painted with Riloplast;
A kitchen oven was used as an example; a specific oven would obviously perform better.
The painted piece should remain in the oven for 90 minutes or more at a temperature between 80 and 50° C.

Can Riloplast be applied on stainless steel ?

Of course, as well as copper, brass, aluminium, etc.
However, these metals with a very shiny and mirror finish must be slightly roughened by mechanical brushing, so that the roughened surface allows the anchorage of paint.

How much area can be covered with one spray can of Riloplast ?

With one spray can, an area of about ½ square meter can be covered with a thick coat of paint, approximately equal to the outer walls of a motorcycle fuel tank.

How can I ensure that the spray can works correctly ?

The causes of the malfunction of an aerosol can be:

  1. because the can was not shaken properly before use;
  2. because the nozzle was not cleaned properly after use, and it is blocked.

To keep the nozzle clean after use, tip the can upside-down and spray a small amount of propellant gas, which will clean the nozzle. In any case, if you notice irregularities, shake well, flip, and spray a few times.

How should I clean the surfaces to be painted ?

Greasiness can be easily cleaned from any material using a good synthetic solvent, or even a good quality turpentine, with a brush and clean rags. If crusts of paint or rust are present, complete mechanical removal is recommended, followed by brushing and final cleaning with solvent.

Is the piece placed in the oven straight away after painting ?

After application, wait 10 or 15 minutes before introducing the piece in the oven;
make sure that the piece is kept in a clean environment during this time;
make sure that when the painted piece is introduced into the oven, the oven is already at a temperature between 55 and 80° C.

Why is it necessary to wait 15-20 days after baking ?

The specifications of renowned car manufacturers have this passivating time for Riloplast on valve covers, gearboxes, intake manifolds and other parts.
If you want to get all the benefits of scratch resistance, corrosion resistance, shock resistance, resistance to sunlight, chemical resistance to petrol and diesel, elasticity, resistance to water, heat and cold, after baking, Riloplast must passivate for 15, better still 21 days, as required by the specifications of the leading international car manufacturers.

What must be done if the wrinkling doesn’t come out well ?

If the painting was done with a cup spray gun, let the piece cool as soon as it is taken out of the oven, and apply other paint over that which was baked: make sure that the thickness is high.
Finally, reintroduce the piece into the oven, which has been kept at a temperature above 55° C and below 80° C, and bake for a further 90 minutes.
If the painting was done with a spray can, and wrinkling was not successful, then proceed immediately, before the paint gets too hard, to remove the paint using a brush soaked in synthetic solvent or turpentine.
Then try again making sure to apply a good thickness.
