What to know about riloplast

To avoid mistakes

  1. Keep the package tightly closed, in a heated room, away from flames and heat sources.
  2. Depending on the colour chosen from the catalogue, the package contains:
    a 375 ml tin,
    or a 400 ml can;
    or a tin and a can;
    or two cans.
  3. The spray cans must be shaken before spraying; to avoid the nozzle clogging after spraying, simply invert the bottle and spray a small amount of propellant gas.
  4. The tins contain a very thick and viscous type of Riloplast; thinning is not required; simply adjust the air pressure that feeds the spraying nozzle.
  5. A standard thinner, such as nitro-synthetic or turpentine, is needed for cleaning or suchlike.
  6. Remember that wood, glass, metal or plastics can be painted, provided they are perfectly clean of greasiness. For polished metals such as stainless steel, aluminium, brass and copper, a thorough brushing to slightly roughen the surface to be painted is recommended in addition to cleaning.
  7. Riloplast cannot be applied with a roller or brush; spray only
  8. The nozzle of the spray gun should have a diameter between 1.5 and 2.2 mm.
  9. The air pressure should be between 3 - 4 atm.
  10. Always paint in a dust free, clean and heated environment, and with the piece to be painted at a temperature not below 15° C.
  11. Make sure the baking oven operates normally at a temperatures between 55 and 80° C; best bake for 1 hour at 80° C, rather than for 1 ½ hours at 55° C; if 80° C is not possible a temperature of 55° C is fine for a longer period.

For perfect performance

  1. It is important to be aware that the thicker the application, the better the final result.
  2. High thickness is obtained by continuous shading, covering well all the areas to be painted; 15 continuous passes can be made, with intervals of few seconds to avoid drips.
  3. The amount of paint contained in the tin (375 ml) is sufficient to paint a 1 square meter surface at a very high thickness (300 microns), equal to two motorcycle tanks; however, the spray can version (400 ml), can paint about half a square meter
  4. Spraying with a cup spray gun should look like the spray from the spray cans; this is achieved by adjusting the air pressure before starting the work.

Application differences between the various colours

  1. The user can check that some colours (Maserati Blue, Aluminium Grey, Black, Alfa Romeo Red, Maserati Red, Ferrari Red) are comprised of a single product; application for these products is performed as describe above.
  2. The remaining colours are comprised of two products: one product in a tin or can, according to the user's choice, which acts as a wrinkle base coat; another product, again in spray can, which acts as a finish to get the effect of the colour in the catalogue.
  3. In the latter case, the wrinkle base coat is applied first as in the instructions; then, after the wrinkle base coat has been baked, and after the painted piece has cooled, the spray can finish coat is applied, shading slightly, to cover all the wrinkled black base coat with a thin film; baking in the oven is performed on the black wrinkle base coat only;

Baking

  1. Before starting to paint, make sure that the oven works well, and that the minimum temperature of 55° C, or the maximum of 80° C is ensured.
  2. The oven should be at temperature when the painted piece is introduced in the oven.
  3. Oven time should be at least 60 minutes; better still if the piece is kept in the oven for 2 hours, especially if the oven temperature is 55° C.
  4. The paint will have a beautiful wrinkled effect when leaving the oven. The wrinkling will be somewhat fine if the application thickness is low; It will be quite evident if the application thickness is high. If the wrinkling is not sufficiently evident, this means that the application thickness was too low.

After baking

  1. On removal from the oven, the wrinkled paint is plastic, not hard and does not express its resistance qualities.
  2. Il pezzo verniciato va maneggiato con molta cura, per evitare di rovinare la vernice.
  3. The piece should be left for a few days in a clean place to passivate.
  4. The best performance is obtained after 15-20 days from baking; after this period, the paint is very hard, and expresses all its benefits.

20 days after baking

  1. The wrinkled paint is very hard.
  2. The paint is now very resistant, without colour changes, at a continuous temperature of 100° C.
  3. The piece can now be exposed to the sun and weather.
  4. The paint is also very flexible and has a good resistance to shock and vibration.
  5. Is resistant to drops of petrol and diesel, without distortion.
  6. If the painted piece is metallic, the paint coating protects it from corrosion for years.

The colour range

As shown in the catalogue, the colour range is very wide.
These colours also include the original colours used by leading automotive manufacturers.
All Riloplast colours are packaged in both tins as well as spray cans.
When selecting different colours, it is possible to check if the colour chosen is composed of a single product or two products:
in the latter case, a product that is always Riloplast Black, acts as a base coat;
the other product, always spray paint, is the finishing coat.
All colours have been tested and guaranteed by years of testing and use at the most reliable car and motorcycle manufacturers, at the shipyard, and by designers and architects of great reputation.

The history

Back in the 20s, some formulations of wrinkle paints circulated in some industrial application.
These were paints that derived from organic resins, which by means of special heat reacting catalysts, assumed the typical rough wrinkled appearance.
Wrinkle paint reappeared in the 50s, especially in black in the painting of old cameras: hard but opaque paint.
Riloplast was created in the 80s, in the Nuova Univer Industria Chimica Laboratories, in the province of Treviso - Italy.
Nuova Univer Industria Chimica is today Univer Sokema.
Riloplast is the new wrinkled paint technology:
bright colours, elegant wrinkling, absence of harmful substances, absence of catalysts, low temperature reactivity, high chemical resistance.
Riloplast has become synonymous with wrinkled paint.
